Slavery in the South: A Lesson on Race, Place, and Space

Abstract During this lesson, students will become familiar to the transatlantic slave trade and its impact on the early colonization of the United States. Students will use a variety of primary and secondary sources, visuals, and graphs to analyze the causes and effects of African slavery and the growth of the southern colonies in America. Students will use this lesson and the tools provided to be able to answer the following questions: • Why did American slavery revolve predominately around the use of African slaves after 1619? • How was the society of the Southern Colonies defined by its reliance on the “plantation system”? • What were key reasons why the “South” became the leading place for slave trading and the use of slave labor?
