Abstract Slaves like Nat Turner and abolitionists like Harriet Tubman risked their lives to help slaves escape to the North on the Underground Railroad. How did slaves find their way along the secret route? How did they know who to trust? As students create their own network and system of secret signs, they will begin to understand the significance of the Fugitive Slave Law as an event leading up to the Civil War.
